Oh but i just now find that switching these X modes (configured as modelines in /etc/X11/xorg.conf) won't work anymore. 

Maybe because the 'video=' parameter overides them or the framebuffer (with xorg) does not allow for that kind of on-the-fly switching ?

It's a little bit of a pity because in the past i encountered some non-desktop-integrated apps (outside of any repo) where i didn't know how to enlarge their tiny fonts. And then it was convenient to just enlarge the screen.
But anyway they are not that essential and also, some of them got better desktop integration, over the years.
