[mc] why does mc prepend "/" in front of all directory names ?

Hello,

why does midnight commander show "/" in front of directory name?

perhaps to visually differentiate files from directories?

technically, and pedantically, I think it makes no sense, and is
confusing. On UNIX, path starting with / start at the root of the
filesystem.

Anyway, since I already have different colors for directories, is there
any way to remove the leading slash ?
