It's not yet clear if the macro definition was wrong or is causing things at all.

I would suggest Ben try Alexanders approach, just check out the permissions with ls -al or just use mc.

It is possible that there is no root $HOME at all and every configuration made as root ends up either in the $HOME inherited from the sudo caller, or even just goes > /dev/null.
