So here's a great (if a bit weird) thing:

If I use sudo mc, I have the problems we've been trying to chase down.

But if I use...

    sudo -s [password]
    mc

...mc and the internal mcedit work just fine!

Furthermore, a problem I'd been having where "configuration/pause after
run/always" did not work with "su mc", also goes away.

mc now waits for me to hit return and I can see the results of the command
as I should be able to. This always worked properly with a non-su
invocation of mc, but not with su mc.

So I will simply use su -s from now on. Problem(s!) solved.
