"Shell link" is FISH (mc's own protocol over SSH), SFTP is also supported, 
but needs a separate library.

It sounds like something has changed in the file list output on the FTP 
server side, so mc can't parse it properly any longer. Your version of mc 
is extremely outdated though, I would start by updating it to the latest 
version first...
