[mc] syntax highlight problem

Hi,
I compiled mc-4.8.28 on Debian11.

My problem is:
AS A USER,
Syntices like html are autodetected and highlighted. 
Using mcedit, spice and markdown syntax is not (automatically) highlighted. 
I can select the syntax using F9->options->syntax highlighting->Md File.

AS ROOT, 
mc automatically detects ALL the files and applies the syntax. What should I do. Please guide.
