That actually works. I have the command line deactivated since I
have no use for it in my workflow. I always use a real shell with
<ctrl-O>.

While reading the man page about a key binding to quickly
activate/deactivate the command line I stumbled upon the “Quick cd”
command <M-C> which does exactly what I need. No need to activate
the command line.
