Alt-o in xterm

Specifically, it is altSendsEscape that needs to be set. This can be done 
most easily by creating a file in your home directory which is called

.Xdefaults

and in it you put the contents

XTerm*metaSendsEscape:  true


With this, your problem will be solved.
