Bold/bright colors don't work as background.

alpine (perhaps you mean pico) sort-of uses the terminfo database,
but has a lot of hardcoded stuff in it.  But it's not able to do
anything to the terminal that ncurses or s-lang couldn't also do.
It may be labeling things differently however.

(not as bad as pine was - I recall reading its terminal code,
about 30,000 lines in one file ;-)
