Thanks again. It seems that using mc in Konsole (KDE 3.5.7) on a PC simply *  
(Shift-8) does the thing.  So simple if you know :)) 

Any link to hypothetical "MC: The Missing Manual"  or similar text would be 
highly appreciated! :-)
