MC can't find graphical characters

To have a semi-nice looking mc, you can call it like "mc -a" (-a means 
"use ASCII line drawing characters"). The rest depends on your terminal. 
I have had success running mc inside the GNU screen program. You might 
also try some other TERM values like vt100, or rxvt.
