When I try to integrate the utf8 patches for slang and mc in the
mandrake rpms, I end up with a broken mc. The same happens when I use
your fedora mc-src.rpm.
Mandrake's rpm is compile with --enable-nls and --enable-charset, while
your fedora rpm isn't, but that seems to make no difference.

What basically happens is that when I have a normal locale set (en_US),
all is well:

Then when I set an utf8 locale I get a messed up screen, where the line-
drawing characters, etc are all blocks (in gnome-terminal) or
questionmarks (on console):

When I only set LC_CTYPE back to en_US, all is well again.

When I use drakconf (Mandrake control centre) which uses newt (using
0.51.6) I get the same behaviour.

Just to be informational, I send along the contents of /etc/sysconfig/
i18n
SYSFONTACM=iso15
LANGUAGE=en_US.UTF-8:en
LC_COLLATE=en_US.UTF-8
LC_TIME=en_US.UTF-8
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LC_MESSAGES=en_US.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8
SYSFONT=lat0-16
