MCHOME environment variable

I have put a copy of mc on a linux machine where I don't have rights to place 
files in the /usr/lib directory.  According to the man page, I can accommodate 
this situation by setting the MCHOME environment variable to the directory in 
which the /usr/lib/mc files appear.    Is MCHOME a substitute for /usr, for 
/usr/lib, or for /usr/lib/mc.  Actually, I believe I've tried them all.
