And what do you see in config.log about this error?

Please always provide information about the software you are using unless
you are _sure_ that it's irrelevant.

You didn't mention what kind of UNIX you are running and what version of
glib you have installed.

I recommend you to try glib-1.2.10 - it's the latest version from the
stable branch.

You may also want to specify the "--disable-shared"  argument for the
glib's "configure" script - it may spare you some problems with shared
libraries (I'm guessing because you didn't give us enough information
about your OS).
