.mo recognized but .gmo not

Why not add .gmo to the list of recognized files?

.gmo are the same as .mo files? If yes, why in mc sources/po there are
.gmo files (that mc itself does not recognize, do not automatically view) 
and not .mo files (that correctly open with mcview)? Are the sources of mc
wrong or is a mc extension file config item missing?
