You can compare the environment of the "correct" and "incorrect" mc
inside screen (e.g. in case of Linux, by something like  tr '\0' '\n'
< /proc/xxx/environ | sort... and then diff).

Look for TERM, COLORTERM, TERMCAP... who knows what else.
