compiling mc under ubuntu 12.04

Creating symlinks sounds very wrong and harmful for installed system.

Neither debian nor ubuntu ships gcc out of the box. So mc won't be the
sole problematic package for you.

They have facility to install all the build dependencies in one shot:
    apt-get build-dep mc
