And still I have some 100 warnings "...input unused because linking not done" - which I'm not going to track down. Don't you think your latest release should _always_ compile straight from the box under the major Linux distro? Without those, no complex source code will compile (including Midnight Commander). Having gcc and libc-dev installed is not enough in most cases (as you found out yourself). If I remember correctly Debian/Ubuntu has three files for each source. The original tarball, the distro specific changes and a description file. The description file tells all the building requirements to make a package just as the maintainer did. There is an automated tool (whose name I don't remember) which takes this description file and creates a build environment based on that. This tool called pbuilder. Frank, wrote >Don't you think your latest release should _always_ compile straight from the box under the major Linux distro? Thats right. I assume that you mean 4.8.3 as latest release - this version smoothly compiles under Ubuntu Precise 12.04 You should refer to the list of build dependencies: https://www.midnight-commander.org/wiki/doc/buildAndInstall/req or use prebuild versions from your distributions or some from: https://www.midnight-commander.org/wiki/Binaries -- WBR, Andrey Tataranovich From slyfox at inbox.ru Fri Jun 22 19:58:14 2012 From: slyfox at inbox.ru (Sergei Trofimovich) Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2012 22:58:14 +0300 Subject: compiling mc under ubuntu 12.04 In-Reply-To: <4FE42E30.4070103@gmail.com> References: <4FE42E30.4070103@gmail.com> Message-ID: <20120622225815.3fc4500f@sf.home> > Compiling the latest mc under Ubuntu 12.04 just took me one hour of > chasing dependencies and creating symlinks. Creating symlinks sounds very wrong and harmful for installed system. > And still I have some 100 warnings "...input unused because linking > not done" - which I'm not going to track down. Care to attach build log so people can laugh^W look at it? > Don't you think your latest release should _always_ compile straight > from the box under the major Linux distro? Neither debian nor ubuntu ships gcc out of the box. So mc won't be the sole problematic package for you. They have facility to install all the build dependencies in one shot: apt-get build-dep mc -- Sergei -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <4FEDB74A.8050604@earthlink.net> I have many multiboot Linux systems, mostly openSUSE but also Knoppix, Gentoo, Fedora, *buntu & Mageia/Mandriva, and in their hotlists I have the following: ENTRY "gwdg.de opensuse" URL "/#ftp:ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse" In 4.8.3 when I use that entry the first time in a session, all entries except .. and a pub entry that does not belong are missing. I can type in cd repositories or distribution or factory and reach the desired locations, after which going to .. gets the pub/opensuse files listing that should have been there in the first place. http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/dfsee-support/message/14213 describes a similar missing files problem I see using NFS mounts that I've yet to see with any local or CIFS mounts. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
