[bug #13146] make tabs and trailing spaces visible

Follow-up Comment #15, bug #13146 (project mc):

This may be a bug in gnome-terminal as well... I am also using gnome-terminal
and no matter the color scheme the cursor is invisible. I'll investigate
further...
