Follow-up Comment #1:

Check your locale settings. SuSE uses the UTF-8 patches that might be
incomplete in your version of mc. When using UTF-8 patches use an UTF8
locale.

The UTF8 patches are not officially supported. Contact your vendor ;) . By
the way, Vladimir Nadvornik from SuSE has made significant improvements to
these patches last year.
