btw. glib-2.0.7 is installed on both offenders - I did actually back out 
to 2.0.6 on one of the machines
and configured/built but problem still persists. Did this on a hunch 
because the glib linking here:

gcc -I/usr/local/include/glib-2.0 -I/usr/local/lib/glib-2.0/include   -g 
-O2 -Wall   -o man2hlp  man2hlp.o -L/usr/local/lib -lglib-2.0 -lintl 
-liconv   -lsocket -lnsl -lsocket -lnsl -lgen  -lsocket -lsocket
[...]
../../src/man2hlp mc.1 ./xnc.hlp mc.hlp.it
..blitzkrieg...

I don't have the experience to figure this out as yet.... but if you 
have any more ideas for me to try
let me know as I'm ready to test further as needed.
