I think the right for FTP passwords is ~/.netrc, not ~/.mc/hotlist.  If
you allow the password to be saved outside .netrc, it should not be
considered so secret that it needs to be hidden.

Since you didn't mention your version of mc, I cannot tell you if it
implements .netrc support correctly.
