Internal error: No more virtual file handles

I made a mistake with lndir(1) and it ended in an infinite loop
creating subdirectories. I then tried to remove them. The
subject says it all. After the error is displayed I press Enter
and it hangs.

To reproduce:

mkdir -p or something with various subdirectories (I reproduced
with ~100).

This is (still) CVS from August 18. filesystem is ext3. kernel
2.4.19. glibc 2.2.5.
