I'm sorry, I'm away and will be back on Monday.  Right now I cannot check
anything, but let me guess.

I think you are building from CVS, not from the snapshot (the snapshot is
generated by "make distcheck", so it should be OK).  Then you should remove
the empty doc/es directory and run "cvs update -d" to retrieve new
directories.  Unfortunately, the default behavior of CVS is to ignore new
directories.
