iconv is not detected with --enable-charset

$ ./configure --enable-charset

configure: warning: Cannot enable charset support because iconv function is missing

		    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

What a surprise!  I HAVE iconv (glibc-2.2.2).
Not so long ago it did WORKED with CVS version of mc. Not it does not.
